FROM EDI TO EDITEL - OUR STORY

1980
1980s – the beginnings
The evolution of EDITEL began when EDI technology and automation in the FMCG retail sector were in their infancy. In 1987, shortly after EAN-Austria (now GS1 Austria) introduced the barcode, the EDI business unit started developing Austria's first EDI platform, ECODEX (Electronic Commercial Data Exchange). The goal was exclusively to facilitate the exchange of standardized electronic business data in the EANCOM® format, a subset of the UN/EDIFACT standard. Even then, ECODEX supported over 40 business-critical document types, including orders, invoices, and other logistically relevant documents.

1990
1990s – the growth years
Alongside the FMCG sector, the automotive industry was among the first to adopt EDI. Although the internet was not yet accessible to the general public, IT technology continued to spread steadily. However, EDI remained primarily the domain of large corporations, while small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were barely integrated. Simultaneously, the fall of the Iron Curtain and the opening of Eastern European markets brought new economic opportunities. During this period, ECODEX established itself as the leading EDI platform in Austria.

2000
2000 – industry-wide and international
Market dynamics and internationalization reach a new level. EDI expands both cross-industry and cross-border. In addition to the FMCG and automotive industries, EDI technologies find applications in other sectors, including construction, pharmaceuticals, furniture manufacturing, transportation and logistics, as well as banking and public administration. ECODEX extended its network beyond Austria, laying the groundwork for the gradual expansion of the EDI network in Central and Eastern Europe.

2004
2004 – the future is eXite®
Digitalization continues to advance. At the turn of the millennium, the EDI platform ECODEX recorded millions of transactions per year, prompting the next crucial development step: in 2004, a new era began with the EDI platform eXite® (successor to ECODEX). As expected, it provides a fail-safe infrastructure, comprehensive records of all transactions, and enables seamless networking between business partners for automated business processes in real time.

2008
2008 – independence
After many successful years under the umbrella of GS1 Austria (formerly EAN Austria), it was time for eXite® to stand on its own two feet. The entire EDI operation was spun off into an independent company—EDITEL. Utilizing cutting-edge technologies, EDITEL quickly evolved into a full-service provider in the field of EDI, continuously expanding its range of services to optimally meet the growing demands of its customers.

2010
2010 – expansion of the EDITEL network
Driven by increasing customer demand, EDITEL expanded into several countries and developed into a leading European player. As a central EDI partner for international companies, EDITEL offered the ability to process EDI transactions worldwide through a unified platform, which remains one of the greatest advantages of working with EDITEL to this day.

2020
2020 – Digitalization boom
Nearly 100.000 companies worldwide now use EDITEL's services to process approximately 1 billion transactions annually via eXite®. This solid foundation paved the way for the continuous spread of digitalization, which gained additional momentum through new legal regulations for electronic invoicing. EDITEL Austria evolved into the headquarters of the EDITEL Group and assumed overall responsibility for operating the eXite® platform.
